Insurance Requirements
Hangar Direct prioritizes safety for everyone on the platform. Both aircraft owners and hangar owners are expected to maintain appropriate insurance coverage and provide proof of insurance upon request. Hangar Direct does not provide, sell, or broker any insurance products. Both parties are responsible for obtaining their own coverage.
1 - For Aircraft Owners (Tenants)
Aircraft owners must be prepared to provide proof of insurance when requested by Hangar Direct or a hangar owner. Recommended coverage includes:
- Liability insurance: With limits that adequately cover potential damages or injuries to third parties. Minimum coverage amounts may vary by hangar or airport.
- Hull insurance: To cover physical damage to your aircraft from weather events, hangar incidents, or other risks.
Many aircraft owners assume that a hangar owner's insurance will cover their plane in the event of a storm or incident. In most cases, hangarkeeper's insurance only covers damage caused by the operator's negligence, not acts of nature. Your own hull policy is the only reliable protection for your aircraft.
2 - For Hangar Owners
Hangar owners must also be prepared to provide proof of insurance upon request. Recommended coverage includes:
- Hangar structure insurance: Protects the physical building against damage from fire, storms, vandalism, and other events. Given the lightweight construction of many hangars, this coverage is essential.
- Hangarkeeper's liability insurance: Provides coverage if an aircraft is damaged while in your care, custody, or control. This is critical for any owner who stores aircraft belonging to others.
- General liability insurance: Protects against claims of bodily injury or property damage occurring on the hangar premises.
If you manage tenants at scale, consider environmental/pollution liability and workers' compensation coverage for commercial operations as well.
3 - How Hangar Direct Helps You Stay Compliant
Meeting insurance requirements is straightforward with Hangar Direct's built-in compliance tools:
- Document uploads: Both aircraft owners and hangar owners can upload insurance certificates directly to their profile. The platform uses OCR technology to automatically extract policy numbers, coverage types, and expiration dates.
- Status indicators: Your profile clearly shows whether your insurance is valid, expiring soon, or expired, so you always know where you stand.
- Automated reminders: The system sends notifications before your documents expire, giving you time to renew without any lapse in coverage.
- Compliance dashboard (for airport managers and FBOs): Track insurance status across all tenants from a single screen. Filter by status, sort by days overdue, and send reminders directly from the dashboard.
4 - Important Notes
Hold-harmless clauses: Many hangar leases include hold-harmless or indemnification clauses. Be aware that signing such a clause without your underwriter's approval can void your aircraft insurance policy entirely. Always consult your insurance provider before signing a lease with hold-harmless language.
Verification: Hangar Direct may request proof of insurance from either party at any time to ensure compliance. Failure to provide documentation when requested may result in booking cancellation.
Professional guidance: For personalized advice and to ensure adequate coverage, consult with an aviation insurance professional. Organizations such as the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and Avemco offer specialized aviation insurance plans.
5 - Liability
Hangar Direct facilitates connections between hangar owners and aircraft owners but is not a party to any rental agreement. The platform does not assume liability for damages or incidents that occur between users. Both parties are encouraged to review our Terms of Service and maintain insurance coverage appropriate to their situation throughout their time on the platform.
